Dr Jennifer Taggart is a consultant psychiatrist with more than 20 years of experience providing comprehensive mental health care across hospital and outpatient settings. She is a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
Dr Taggart’s clinical expertise spans a broad range of psychiatric conditions including mood and anxiety disorders, complex trauma, eating disorders, psychosis, chronic pain, and functional neurological disorders. She brings an integrative and compassionate approach to each consultation, aiming to understand the interplay between biological, psychological, and social factors that influence mental health and wellbeing.
Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
Dr Taggart has a particular interest in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry — a specialised field working at the interface of physical and mental health. Her work includes caring for patients in pre-transplant, chronic medical, and neuropsychiatry clinics, where she supports individuals managing the psychological impact of acute and chronic illness.
This is a highly relevant area of expertise for the patients we see at MedSurg Weight Loss. The relationship between mental health and metabolic or physical health conditions is well established, and many patients navigating weight management, bariatric surgery, or chronic illness benefit greatly from the support of a psychiatrist who understands both domains. Dr Taggart’s ability to work at this intersection — collaborating closely with medical, surgical, and allied health teams — makes her an invaluable part of our extended care team.
Dr Taggart sees patients by internal referral only. To access her services, you will first need to be an existing patient of MedSurg Weight Loss and be referred by one of our doctors.
Psychiatric Support for Weight Management Patients
Managing weight and metabolic health is rarely just a physical challenge. For many patients, psychological factors — including mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, disordered eating, and the emotional burden of chronic illness — play a significant role in their health journey.
Dr Taggart provides specialist psychiatric support that complements the work of our GPs, dietitians, psychologist, and exercise physiologist. She is particularly well placed to support patients who:
- Are experiencing significant mood, anxiety, or trauma symptoms that may be affecting their health outcomes
- Have a history of eating disorders or complex disordered eating patterns
- Are preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery and require psychiatric assessment or clearance
- Are managing a chronic medical condition and experiencing associated psychological distress
- Have complex presentations that require specialist psychiatric input alongside broader medical care
Medicare & Referral Information
Dr Taggart sees patients by internal referral only — meaning she is available exclusively to existing MedSurg Weight Loss patients who have been referred by one of our doctors. She does not accept referrals from external GPs or other clinics.
If you are already a patient with us and your doctor feels that psychiatric support would benefit your care, they will discuss this with you and arrange a referral to Dr Taggart directly. Medicare rebates are available under this referral pathway.
