ADHD
Assessments

Our GP ADHD assessment service provides a supportive and structured pathway for adults seeking assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management. We take a holistic approach, recognising the connection between ADHD, mental wellbeing, eating behaviours, and metabolic health.

Understanding Adult ADHD

At MedSurg Weight Loss, we offer GP ADHD assessments for adults experiencing difficulties with focus, organisation, motivation, emotional regulation, or executive functioning.

Many adults live with ADHD symptoms for years without a clear explanation for why everyday tasks can feel more difficult, overwhelming, or mentally exhausting. Our goal is to help you better understand your symptoms and guide you towards the right next steps.

ADHD in adults often presents differently to the “hyperactive child” stereotype many people associate with the condition. Symptoms may appear as chronic overwhelm, difficulty staying organised, emotional dysregulation, poor follow-through, mental fatigue, or constantly feeling like you are “falling behind” despite trying hard.

What to Expect from the Assessment Process

Our ADHD assessment process is structured and comprehensive to ensure a thorough evaluation. Please note that a minimum of 3 appointments is required to complete the assessment process.

Initial assessment (2 x 60 minute appointments)
Your assessment begins with two extended GP consultations. These appointments allow us to explore your symptoms in detail, including your current concerns, developmental history, and how these difficulties impact your daily life. We may also use structured screening tools and questionnaires as part of this process.

Treatment planning appointment
Following your assessment, a third appointment is scheduled to review findings and discuss next steps. This may include whether ADHD is a likely diagnosis and a discussion of appropriate treatment options will occur. This appointment includes prescription of ADHD medications if appropriate.

Ongoing management and medication reviews
If treatment is commenced, follow-up appointments are used to monitor your progress and, where appropriate, carefully titrate medication to achieve the best balance of effectiveness and tolerability. These reviews are an important part of ensuring safe and effective long-term management.

A Comprehensive & Patient-Centred Approach

At MedSurg Weight Loss, our GP ADHD assessments are designed to be respectful, evidence-based, and patient-centred. We take the time to understand your concerns in context rather than relying solely on screening questionnaires.

Your assessment may include:

Where appropriate, we may also discuss whether referral to a psychiatrist or other specialist would be beneficial as part of your ongoing care.

ADHD, Weight & Metabolic Health

There is growing evidence that ADHD can be closely linked with metabolic health and weight management. Difficulties with planning, impulse control, emotional regulation, routine, and sleep can all influence eating behaviours, physical activity, and long-term health habits.

This may contribute to:

At MedSurg Weight Loss, we take a holistic approach that recognises the connection between ADHD, metabolic health, and overall wellbeing. For some individuals, addressing underlying ADHD symptoms can be an important step towards improving long-term health, lifestyle consistency, and sustainable weight management.

Common Questions

ADHD Assessment FAQs

How many appointments are involved in the assessment?

The assessment process is completed over at least three appointments. This includes two initial 60-minute assessment consultations, followed by a treatment consultation to discuss outcomes and next steps (including commencing medication if appropriate). Following this, a series of short reviews occur fortnightly to modify and stabilise your treatment. Once your treatment is optimised, you can typically return to 3 monthly review appointments.

Will I receive a diagnosis at the end of the assessment?

Your GP will assess whether ADHD is a likely diagnosis and discuss this with you. In Queensland, GP’s can prescribe and titrate your ADHD medication treatment without the need for specialist care. However, in some cases (eg/ complex presentations with multiple other mental health conditions), referral to our in-house Psychiatrist may be recommended for specialist support.

What happens during the initial appointments?

The first two appointments are comprehensive assessments. Your GP will explore your current symptoms, history, and how these impact your daily life. This may include structured questions, screening tools, and a detailed review of your medical and personal background.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

Yes, Queensland GP’s can diagnose and prescribe therapy for ADHD. We have a dedicated ADHD diagnostic and treatment team at MedSurg Weight Loss including special interest GP’s, a psychologist and a Psychiatrist to comprehensively care for you and support your physical and mental health.
