MedSurg Weight Loss is a Metabolic Health and Weight Loss Clinic. We are a Doctor owned and Doctor led medical practice that focuses on respectful and comprehensive care of people who are living with overweight or obesity.
We believe in quality healthcare and adopt a holistic approach for all our patients. We work within a multidisciplinary team, incorporating expertise from a variety of specialties to provide you with the best weight loss advice and metabolic health care.
We are not focused on the number on the scale — instead, we are committed to improving health and wellbeing through safe and medically supported weight loss interventions tailored to the individual.
MedSurg Weight Loss is a Specialised Medical Practice for the treatment of overweight and obesity. We provide very long consultations so that we can get to know you and your history well.
While your GP certainly gets to know you over time, the current General Practice funding model doesn't always allow for the extended time needed to properly discuss weight management. Some GPs also have other areas of special interest — that's where we step in.
We work alongside your GP, not instead of them. We always write a letter to your GP and other care providers to keep them informed of our findings and recommendations after every consultation.
A metabolic health check involves checking your body for diseases that can be related to overweight and obesity. It's more than just weight loss support — it's a complete health check-up aimed at reducing your risk factors for certain medical complications.
People living in larger bodies are at risk of developing conditions including:
If we find any medical complications, we will explore treatment options with you.
No referral is required to book an appointment with any of our doctors, dietitians, or exercise physiologist. You can book directly online or call us on (07) 3373 0265.
However, a GP referral is required to claim a Medicare rebate under a Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP) or Eating Disorder Management Plan (EDMP) for dietitian appointments. Psychology appointments do not require a referral, though a Mental Health Care Plan may entitle you to a Medicare rebate.
Quite a lot — which is why we schedule a 45 to 60 minute consultation. Your doctor will take a thorough personal, family, social, dietary and weight history from you.
They will identify any health concerns and examine your height, weight, blood pressure, BMI and abdominal circumference, as well as checking for any other signs of metabolic disease. They will discuss all available weight loss options and help you narrow down which intervention suits your personal circumstances best.
Your doctor will also spend time providing education and resources specific to your needs, and may arrange blood tests or other specialised tests as part of a health assessment.
It depends on your individual circumstances. When we first meet you, we may need to see you for a few appointments over a couple of months while we perform tests, review results, and commence treatments.
If you are being medically managed for weight loss, it can take a couple of months to reach the correct and most effective dose of medication. Once you are stable, we will usually aim to see you about once per year, or more often if needed.
For bariatric surgery patients the schedule is different. We will see you to prepare for surgery, then at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months post-operatively. Once stable, we will see you every 12 months for ongoing monitoring.
Yes — we offer Telehealth appointments Australia-wide. Most of our services are available via video call, including medical consultations, dietitian appointments, psychology, and exercise physiology.
You can select Telehealth when booking online, or call us on (07) 3373 0265. Visit our Telehealth page for more information.
We provide a comprehensive range of treatments including:
Yes. We work closely with a number of surgeons to help their patients lose weight prior to surgery — for example, patients who require weight loss before a knee replacement.
Because we work closely with surgeons and anaesthetists, we understand the challenges of caring for people in larger bodies from an operative and anaesthetic perspective. We perform pre-operative assessments and support meaningful weight loss prior to surgery, which may include cardiovascular assessments or arranging sleep study testing for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Yes. Our doctors are experienced in prescribing and managing weight loss medications. There are several prescription weight loss medications currently available in Australia, and our doctors will assess your suitability and prescribe the most appropriate option for your situation.
Weight loss medications can be considered for patients with a BMI greater than 30kg/m2, or greater than 27kg/m2 with an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or obstructive sleep apnoea. Your doctor will assess your individual circumstances at your consultation.
Visit our Medical Weight Loss page for more information.
Yes. Our doctors can issue electronic prescriptions sent directly to you or your preferred pharmacy. Repeat prescription appointments are available via Telehealth for established patients.
Our doctors do not perform surgery themselves, but we work closely with a group of highly experienced bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeons in Brisbane. We provide all pre- and post-operative medical care, and can facilitate a referral to a surgeon if surgery is the right option for you.
Patients are always free to choose their own surgeon. Visit our Surgical Weight Loss page for more information.
Our doctors have extensive experience managing patients before and after all major types of bariatric surgery, including:
If you have had surgery elsewhere and are looking for long-term post-operative care, we are also very happy to see you.
Yes. Medicare rebates are available on eligible consultations with our doctors and for dietitian appointments under a Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP) or Eating Disorder Management Plan (EDMP). Psychology appointments may attract a rebate under a Mental Health Care Plan.
