About the Evening
On 21 March 2024, Total Upper GI Surgery and MedSurg Weight Loss hosted a GP Education Evening at Blackbird Restaurant in Brisbane — bringing together local General Practitioners for an evening of clinical learning and peer discussion focused on obesity medicine and related upper gastrointestinal conditions.
The event provided 1.5 CPD hours and offered an excellent forum for GPs to engage with specialist perspectives across two increasingly connected areas of practice: the surgical management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and the evolving integration of pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery in metabolic care.
Speakers
Topics Covered
An evidence-based overview of when GORD warrants surgical intervention — including the patient profiles most likely to benefit, and how GPs can identify and appropriately refer candidates.
How GLP-1 receptor agonists and other weight loss medications intersect with the surgical pathway — including pre-operative use, post-operative considerations, and how the two modalities can complement each other in metabolic care.
Practical considerations for GPs working with patients living with overweight or obesity — including referral pathways, shared care models, and how to navigate the expanding treatment landscape alongside patients.
Strengthening the Referral Network
Events like this reflect a shared commitment to improving outcomes for patients with complex metabolic and upper GI conditions. By bringing together GPs and specialists in a collegial setting, MedSurg Weight Loss and Total Upper GI Surgery strengthen the referral relationships and clinical communication that underpin coordinated, high-quality patient care.
