How it works
MedSurg Weight Loss works closely with our Surgical Practice Partner – ‘Total Upper GI Surgery.’ Dr Paige Lanyon-Roberts has worked alongside Dr David Mitchell, Dr Kevin Chan and Dr Robert Finch for many years as their Surgical Assistant and referral partner. Our Medical, Surgical and Allied Health Practitioners have formed a highly professional and exceptional quality multidisciplinary care team for our Bariatric Surgical patients. Collectively we provide comprehensive, respectful and meticulous care of the highest standard to all of our patients, ensuring that every patient receives the support they need throughout their surgical weight loss journey. Dr Mitchell, Dr Chan and Dr Finch are also highly regarded General, Upper GI and Oesophageal Cancer Surgeons.
Patients are always free to choose any bariatric surgeon they prefer. If you have an existing relationship with a surgeon, we are happy to collaborate with them to support your care.

FRACS, AANZGOSA, MBBS, BSc
Dr David Mitchell is a Queensland-trained General, Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon with extensive sub-specialty training across some of Australia’s leading centres. After completing a Bachelor of Science in Medical Science at Queensland University of Technology, Dr Mitchell completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2007 and commenced General Surgery training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2011.
Awarded his Fellowship (FRACS) in 2015, he undertook sub-specialty training at Concord Hospital in Sydney before being accepted onto the official AANZGOSA fellowship training program, completing further training at Royal North Shore Hospital (Sydney) and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. During this time he developed particular expertise in advanced oesophago-gastric cancer, reflux and bariatric surgery.
Dr Mitchell is currently an Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he is part of both the Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Multidisciplinary Teams. He serves as Director of General Surgery Training at the RBWH and is a current member of the AANZGOSA Training Board and the Statewide Bariatric Service Clinical and Operational Reference Group (CORG). He has published and presented on oesophageal cancer, reflux and bariatric outcomes both nationally and internationally.
FRACS, MBBS
Dr Robert Finch is a consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, with extensive sub-specialty training completed in Australia and abroad. He serves as Chairman of the Morbidity and Mortality Committee and a clinical supervisor at the RBWH, and holds a University of Queensland appointment as Clinical Lecturer in Surgery.
His subspecialty expertise encompasses upper gastrointestinal surgery including surgery for weight loss and reflux, covering both benign and malignant disease. All malignant conditions are managed in a multidisciplinary manner with appropriate involvement of oncologists and other specialists. Dr Finch is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon and applies keyhole surgical techniques where appropriate.
Dr Finch is a regular speaker at national and international meetings and is a member of the Australian and New Zealand subspecialty societies for upper gastrointestinal surgery. He is committed to the highest standards of clinical surgery, including the technical aspects of surgery, pre-operative planning and post-operative care. He has previously provided surgical outreach services to Longreach Hospital.

Dr Kevin Chan brings a uniquely broad background to his surgical practice, having worked as a pharmacist before completing his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2008. He began General Surgery training in Queensland in 2011 and was awarded his Fellowship in 2015, subsequently undertaking further training in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.
Dr Chan was then accepted onto the highly competitive AANZGOSA post-fellowship training program, gaining extensive experience in advanced upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and Concord Repatriation General Hospital Sydney.
He returned to Brisbane to join Total Upper GI Surgery, a practice built by like-minded surgeons committed to exceptional care in weight loss, reflux, oesophagogastric cancer and general surgery. Dr Chan’s special areas of interest include reflux surgery, upper gastrointestinal oncology and bariatric surgery. He is a member of AANZGOSA, ANZMOSS and GSA and regularly attends local and international conferences to stay at the forefront of developments in his field. He currently holds a VMO post at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
