- Guidelines have recently been updated — eligibility now begins at BMI ≥35, or BMI 30–35 with an obesity-related condition
- Some people of certain ethnic backgrounds may qualify at lower BMI thresholds
- Eligibility is assessed by your doctor based on full health history and current metabolic status — not BMI alone
- If you don't currently meet surgical criteria, medical weight loss may be an appropriate first step
The Two Eligibility Pathways
The general medical guidelines for bariatric (weight loss) surgery have recently been updated. Eligibility is based primarily on BMI, but there are two distinct pathways — meaning a lower BMI does not automatically rule you out:
Eligible regardless of the presence of other health conditions
Eligible when an obesity-related condition is also present
Qualifying Obesity-Related Conditions (Pathway B)
If your BMI falls between 30 and 35, you may still be eligible for bariatric surgery if you have one or more of the following obesity-related conditions:
Some people of certain ethnic backgrounds — particularly South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern backgrounds — may qualify at lower BMI thresholds than those listed above. Please seek personalised advice from your GP, Bariatric Doctor, or Bariatric Surgeon.
How Eligibility Is Assessed
Meeting the BMI criteria is a necessary starting point — but it is not the only factor that determines whether bariatric surgery is appropriate for you. Your doctor will undertake a comprehensive assessment covering:
Previous surgeries, medications, allergies, and any medical conditions that could affect surgical risk or recovery.
Blood tests, blood pressure, blood glucose, HbA1c, lipids, liver function, and other relevant markers to understand your current metabolic health.
Bariatric surgery requires significant lifestyle changes post-operatively. Psychological assessment and readiness are important parts of the pre-surgical evaluation.
Your doctor will help you understand what to expect from surgery, what the realistic outcomes are, and how to prepare for the procedure and recovery period.
