Body Mass Index (BMI) is a tool that is used in healthcare to assess one of the components of your overall health and cardiovascular risk. It is measured using your weight and height and is expressed as a number in kg/m².
Please note, BMI alone is not a good measure of your health and "normal" BMI ranges do not apply to all people from all populations. Our doctors use BMI alongside a full metabolic health assessment to build a complete picture of your health.
Waist circumference in adults is a very good indicator of visceral fat and is a far better predictor than BMI for risk of developing metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2017–18 National Health Survey, 63% of Australian adults had an "at risk" waist circumference, which puts them at a higher risk of developing chronic disease.
| Sex | Increased Risk | Substantially Increased Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Women | ≥ 80 cm | ≥ 88 cm |
| Men | ≥ 94 cm | ≥ 102 cm |
Note: these thresholds are lower for people from Asian, Middle Eastern, and some other ethnic backgrounds. Speak with your doctor for guidance specific to your background.
