Beyond the Scale: Highlights from Our World Obesity Day Event

On Wednesday 4 March 2026, we were proud to host our World Obesity Day event, “Beyond the Scale: Your Weight Loss Questions Answered” at the Ron Hurley Theatre in Brisbane.

The evening brought together members of the community, patients, and health-conscious individuals for an open, honest, and evidence-based discussion about weight and metabolic health.

A Different Kind of Conversation About Weight

One of the key goals of the event was to shift the conversation away from the number on the scale and towards a deeper understanding of weight as a complex, chronic condition.

As discussed on the night, obesity is not simply a matter of willpower. It is influenced by biology, hormones, environment, psychology, and lifestyle factors. This aligns with growing recognition that obesity should be treated as a chronic disease requiring long-term, multidisciplinary care.

Our aim was to create a safe and supportive environment where people could ask questions, challenge misconceptions, and leave with practical, medically grounded insights.

What We Covered

The evening featured short presentations from our multidisciplinary team, followed by a live Q&A session, one of the most valuable parts of the night.

Key topics included:

  • Why weight gain occurs and why weight loss is often difficult to maintain
  • The role of biology, hormones, and metabolism
Evidence-based treatment options, including lifestyle, behavioural support, and medical therapies
  • Nutrition strategies to support sustainable weight loss
  • How to exercise safely during weight loss while preserving muscle and bone health

These discussions reflected a growing shift in modern medicine, moving beyond simplistic advice and towards personalised, evidence-based care.

The Importance of World Obesity Day

World Obesity Day is a global initiative aimed at improving understanding of obesity and reducing stigma.

In Queensland alone, nearly 70% of adults are living with overweight or obesity, highlighting the scale of the issue and the need for better education, access to care, and community support.

Events like this are an important step in changing the narrative, from blame and frustration, to understanding and support.

Thank You

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended and contributed to such a meaningful and respectful discussion.

Your willingness to engage, ask questions, and share your experiences is what made the evening so impactful.
